KALEIDOSCOPE: BLUES FOR ALLAH

For some reason The Growlers got me thinking about Kaleidoscope and lo-and-behold Everloving Records, who put out The Growlers last EP (Hot Tropics), put out a couple obscure records by former Kaleidoscope member Chris Darrow. The band also featured David Lindley.

'Keep Your Mind Open' always sounded like a Guide By Voices track to me, though not sure why.
'Sefan' and 'Taxim' also have the Greek/Eastern vibe.

The Real Blues For Allah!

THE GROWLERS: JETS TO BRASIL AND THE HOT TROPICS

Get ready to hear a lot more from The Growlers. Their next record is being produced by The Black Keys Dan Auerbach and should drop very soon and they play Coachella this year. Dig their already solid brew of surf, psychedelia, blues, Americana... I see the Morrison thing in the beach bum vibe. Didn't the Doors form in Santa Monica? Also in the west coast sunny doom sound sound ala The Doors, The Byrds. The tunes have some of the parlor music vibe Morrison and the Doors messed with. Love the Jack Coleman videos in that old school Super 8 style. They were down in Brazil for Rock in Rio and played with Los Hermanos Marcelo Camelo. Check the live footage and the mini-movie below.

ADELE SEBASTIAN-DESERT FAIRY PRINCESS

I tend to get obsessed with certain artists or groups and end up trying to track down there records. Adele Sebastian was a flute player who played with Horace Tapscott's People's Pan African Arkestra. I have been reading "The Dark Tree", a book written about Tapscott's group and the Los Angles community art scene that grew up around it. Sebastian's one LP is a holy grail among Spiritual/Soulfull Jazz collectors. Tragically, she died at the age of twenty-six or twenty-seven years old. You can pick-up the CD at dustygroove.com for around eleven bucks. Wax is going top cost you a lot more...! All but the last track posted here for your listening pleasure.

CLARK-BOLAND BIG BAND: WIDESCREEN JAZZ

Clark-Boland Big Band was insanely good. Kenny Clarke was one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. He literally played with everyone. Francy Boland was an impeccable arranger, working with Count Basie, Dizzie Gillespe and Duke Ellington and Chet Baker to name a few. He was the band leader, principal arranger and pianist. Jimmy Woode also played with Ellington, playing bass an occasionally singing. The finest players from Europe and American played with the band over the years. Sahib Shihab was an original member and played with band throughout its entire existence. He was also one of the first jazz musicians to convert to Islam and changed his name in 1947.

The Cool jazz of Chet Baker, Latin-leanings of Dizzy Gillespie and swinging arrangements of Duke Ellington and Count Basie can be heard in the band, which was a sort of murder's row of jazz players.

Other notable members of the band included Dusko Goykovich, Johnny Griffin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Jimmy Deuchar, Davis, Muvaffak "Maffy" Falay, Ronnie Scott, Carl Drewo, Tony Coe, Derek Humble, Nat Peck, Ake Persson, Dusko Goykovich, Stan Sulzmann, Ack van Rooyen, John Surman, Manfred Schoof, Albert Mangelsdorff, Erik van Lier, Ron Mathewson, Fats Sadi, Kenny Clare, Benny Bailey, Jimmy Woode, Art Farmer, Shake Keane, Idrees Sulieman, Herb Geller, and were joined on occasions by Phil Woods, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz and many others.
