BLACK FLAG X BLACKHAWKS T SHIRT

I grew up listening to Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Adolescents... My uncle actually managed the Circle Jerks - 'Golden Shower Of Hits' era. I grew up in L.A., but moved to Chicago years ago. I was riding my bike home one day and got the idea for the shirt. My cousin 'Gwar' (yeah, that's his nickname, has been for 20+ years) is a huge Kings fan, so it was kind of a dig at him, too. Of course he secretly likes the Hawks and wants one, too. The greatest punk/hockey shirt of all time?!?! Dunno. Is there another one?

Well, hopefully sue-happy Greg Ginn doesn't come after me. (Or the Blackhawks, either...)

In the meantime; RISE ABOVE!

THE BREAKFAST CLUB FACTION

(Above) Classic scene in the Breakfast Club when Judd Nelson starts to tell the 'naked blonde, poodle, salami' joke, but never gets to finish because he falls through the ceiling.

(Below) The Faction were a killer skate punk band from San Jose in the mid-eighties that featured pro skater Steve Caballero.

Here's their cover of the Mamas and Papas 'California Dreamin', which becomes the bad ass punchline to the mystery joke. Love the tweaked lyrics about watching MTV all day and not being able to buy a coke. Straight old school California style!

RED CROSS (YUP, REDD KROSS!) ALIEN SLEESTACKS FROM BRAZIL, UH LOS ANGELES

Long time fan of this band. Hey Zues! We used to go see these guys all the time, waaay back. Neurotica to Third Eye era. The cutest girls were ALWAYS at the Redd Kross shows. The McDonald brothers started playing in like junior high. I had not heard this EP in ages. Snotty kids, brat punks or punky brats. Attitude, not fashion. Well, fashion later... First gig? Opening for Black Flag.

RED CROSS EP 1980-
with Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks, Bad Religion, on guitar)
All six songs from the 45 EP. Six songs, 6 minutes, punk.

Olderly skool footage... 1982 - Santa Monica

Too f*cking cool for school. Gilberto Gil said Os Mutantes were mutants because they already knew everything. He was referring the fact that they seemed to be knowledgeable, experienced and culturally hip despite being ridiculously young. They were all still teenagers. Jeff and Steve McDonald of Redd Kross were the same way, beginning to play and record at a young age. They cut their teeth in the nascent L.A. punk scene. They did tons of great covers, like on Teen Babes from Monsanto. They covered Os Mutantes' Bat Macumba on the Tater Totz - Alien Sleestacks From Brazil album in 1988! (Yeah, '88, they were alrady on that sh*t!) The album was a side project with Pat Fear of White Flag and Michael Quercio from The Three O'Clock

Their cultural cannibalism was similar to the Tropicalistas in Brazil in that they simultaneously poked fun at and/or worshiped the pop culture they consumed while going from poorly played punk (albeit with unbridled enthusiasm.) to groovy pop-psychedelia.

...said sleestacks. the og mutantes. rita lee superstar

Dug the t-shirt of theirs that said 'friends of Cher'. This was before the creepy auto tune tune "Do you Believe" plastic surgery disaster... Cher is still hot... In a mutante way!

They ripped live after years of playing together. They did a rocking cover of "Puss N' Boots" by the New York Doll on the amazing Hell Comes To Your House compilation, which also included Social Distortion, 45 Grave.

PUSS N' BOOTS (1981)

From Teen Babes from Monsanto...

CUZ THEY SING;

heaven only knows that i love you
heaven only knows that i hate you
heaven only knows i despise you
heaven only knows i idolize you

And destroy tunes by Bowie, The Stones, Kiss, The Stooges. And throw in a tune from Bewitched. You get the heavy and you get the sweet. Something they always did so well.
Yeah a nod is as good as a wink, but they always wore their hearts on their sleeves.

HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS (1984)

'teen babes' insert x 4 tabs, er times...

Couple old friends used to play this round the house. Great original

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO BE YOUR FRIEND (1990)

'Nuther classic original. Stellar album. "Laughing at all the assholes at the Rainbow tryin' so hard to cope, what a joke."

PEACH KELLI POP (1987)

Redd Kross is still playing after reforming around 2004 with longtime member Robert Hecker. Hecker joined in '84 for the 'Teen babes' tour. They played Coachella in 2008. Steven McDonald may be in a town near you. He is currently touring in Off! with Keith Morris from the Circle Jerks. Blistering old school punk. They just played Lollapalooza. Check out cool interview with him about records on BEAT GOES ON.

Dollar A Shoe. Man, I need Vans.

When I was real young my dad used to take my brother and I to hit the sidewalk sale. Big ol' pile a Vans out on the sidewalk. All lost soldiers in need of a match. At that point you had two colors; white or black. Maybe Navy. So we'd tear into the piles looking for our size. It was a buck-a-shoe...
Later on we had the two color lace-ups, slip-ons, and high-tops. Custom kicks and all that. We collected the 'Off the Wall' stickers and covered an entire door with them. They are OG skate shoes. Good in earthquake weather.

Company History - From Wikipedia

On March 16, 1966, at 704 E. Broadway, in Anaheim, California, Paul Van Doren and three partners opened up their first store. The Van Doren Rubber Company was unique in that it manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public. On that first morning, 12 customers purchased Vans deck shoes, which are now known as Authentic. The shoes made that day were ready for pick-up in the afternoon.

The company continued to grow into the 1970s. During this period they also produced wool lined canvas and rubber mukluks under contract to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force. Skateboarders who liked Vans rugged make-up and sticky sole were seen sporting Vans all over Southern California in the early 1970s. In 1975, the Vans #95, known today as the Era was designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. With a padded collar and different color combinations the Era became the shoe of choice for a generation of skateboarders. In 1979, Vans introduced the #44 shoe, and with the help of skateboarders and BMX riders the Vans Slip-On became all the rage in Southern California.

By the end of the 1970s, Vans had 70 stores in California and sold through dealers both nationally and internationally.

As the 1980s rolled around, Paul Van Doren began to take a lesser role in the companies’ activities. Over this period, Vans started to create shoes for a number of sports from skateboarding, wakeboarding, motor cross, to surfing in an effort to compete with large athletic shoe companies. Vans Slip-Ons gained international attention and appeal when they were worn by Sean Penn in the 1982, iconic youth film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Although Vans core shoes were selling well, the wide range of products that the company now offered had drained the companies’ resources, and with Vans not able to overcome its debt they were forced to file for bankruptcy in 1983.

After three years, Vans had paid back all creditors and emerged from bankruptcy. In 1988 Vans original owners sold out to an investment banking firm. The company has been sold several times since; most recently for $396 million in 2004 to Greensboro, N.C.-based VF Corp. Steve Van Doren, the son of co-founder Paul Van Doren, is still with the company, as is his sister Cheryl and his daughter Kristy. Vans closed their Orange, California factory and began manufacturing footwear overseas in 1994. In 1994, Vans sponsored the Inaugural Triple Crown series which developed into the Vans Triple Crown series. In 1998, Vans opened a 46,000-square-foot (4,300 m2), indoor-outdoor Vans Skate park at the Block in Orange County and in 2002 an enclosed skatepark was opened in the Festival Bay Mall on International Drive in Orlando, Florida. In 2000 and 2001, Forbes recognized Vans as one of "America’s Best Small Companies." In 2004, Vans launched the Vans Customs on their website. This allowed customers to log onto the Vans website and design their own pair of Vans Slip-ons, mid-cuts, or high-tops. Nowadays, it allows for the design of custom Era, Slip-On,Old Skool, and 106 Vulcanized shoes.
